AUM Foodie Retreat
October 13th - 15th, 2017
Atlanta Underground Market has been uniting members with their theme of 'Around the World One Plate at a Time!' for years. Several of the chefs have developed quite a following, with many developing ongoing catering opportunities to grow their business doing what they love. Now we're taking the show on the road! Travel with us to destinations as sumptuous as the food for an experience unlike any other.
A major part of Yohana's vision is providing opportunities for chefs to showcase their talents while bringing people together to share in the joys of fellowship as only great food can. It's our hope the retreat will provide an intimate space for people to get to know your favorite chefs, learn how to prepare some new dishes and most of all develop a deeper understanding of the commonality of people across the world.
Each event will feature chefs eager to share their experience and how culture shapes their food. Family style meals with new friends are the jumping off point for an all out exploration of our relationship to each other across the globe. In a relaxed atmosphere, you'll have the opportunity to ask questions and try some new dishes and learn to make your favorites. While the food and fellowship is our focus there is plenty of time to take in the majesty of the mountains and get to know your other group members. We're planning waterfall hikes, yoga, tai chi, fireside chats and more! Of course if your idea of a wonderful weekend is retreating to your cottage to sleep off a great meal you're welcome to join in as you please throughout the weekend.
The setting may be rustic, but your room isn't! Your accommodations for the weekend are in modern cottages of 4 rooms each with all the amenities to keep you comfortable. Depending on your selection you'll have individually keyed rooms with a private or shared bath.

About Suryana Cuisine
Majeda and her son Malek decided to leave Syria in 2012 because of the ongoing war and the threat to their survival. Leaving university, Malek's first move was to Jordon. He recalls, "the life in Jordan is not easy. Finding work is hard and you must overwork for a very small salary."
In 2016, Malek and his mom came to the United States with the assisance of the International Organization for Migration, beginning a very long process of seeking resettlement in the states. After years of working hard to provide for her family, Majeda, wife and mother of two, decided it was time to start a family business doing what she most loved to do -- cooking. With the help of her son, Majeda started selling home-cooked Syrian food at the Clarkston Community Center on a monthly basis. They named their catering business Suryana Cuisine, emphasizing that their service offers both a product and an experience. Suryana Cuisine transports its guests, through a palette of new flavors to their beloved and missed homeland.
Looking into the future, the mother-and-son business would like to expand by opening a kitchen and offering job opportunities to refugees in the community. Suryana's business vision includes providing better work experiences for refugees, with special attention to refugee women. Finally, as the business grows, Majeda and Malek hope to share Syrian food and culture to more people within and beyong their new community in Georgia.
