Are cruise drink packages worth it?

It's time for a refresher on the value of an often confusing aspect of cruises for new guests. If you've been planning a cruise vacation, you’ve likely seen the option to add a drink package. But are cruise drink packages worth it? The answer depends on your preferences, budget, and how you like to vacation. As a travel advisor with years of experience planning cruises, I’ve helped many clients navigate this decision. Let’s break it down so you can decide if it’s the right fit for you.

What Are Cruise Drink Packages?

Cruise drink packages offer unlimited beverages for a daily flat rate. Most cruise lines offer a variety of packages to choose from, typically including options like:

  • Non-Alcoholic Packages: Covering sodas, mocktails, specialty coffees, teas, bottled water, and sometimes fresh juices.
  • Basic Alcohol Packages: Including beers, wines by the glass, and standard cocktails up to a certain price point.
  • Premium Packages: Offering a broader selection of top-shelf spirits, higher-end wines, and specialty cocktails.
  • Coffee and Water Packages: For those who love their lattes or prefer to stay hydrated with bottled water throughout the trip.

How Much Do Drink Packages Cost?

The price of drink packages varies by cruise line, but most range from $20 to $70 per person per day, depending on the package. Some luxury lines may include drink packages in the fare, while others charge separately. Don’t forget to factor in gratuities, which are often added to the package price.

Who Benefits Most from a Drink Package?

Drink packages can be a great value for certain travelers. Here are some scenarios where it might make sense:

  • You enjoy several beverages a day. If you’re the type who starts with a specialty coffee, sips sodas or cocktails by the pool, and pairs dinner with a glass of wine, a package could save you money.
  • You like to try new things. Drink packages allow you to sample different cocktails, wines, and coffees without worrying about the bill adding up.
  • You want an all-inclusive feel. For many travelers, the convenience of not worrying about the cost of each drink enhances the vacation experience.

When a Drink Package Might Not Be Worth It

On the flip side, there are situations where a drink package may not be the best choice:

  • You’re a light drinker. If you only have one or two drinks a day, it’s often cheaper to pay as you go.
  • You plan to spend a lot of time off the ship. Port days might cut into your beverage consumption onboard, reducing the value of a package.
  • Your cruise line allows you to bring beverages onboard. Some lines permit passengers to bring a bottle of wine or a few non-alcoholic drinks, which might cover your needs.

Tips for Deciding

  1. Do the math. Estimate how many drinks you’ll realistically consume each day and compare that to the daily cost of a package.
  2. Consider promotions. Some cruise lines offer drink packages as part of a booking promotion, which can add value to your cruise fare.
  3. Know the policies. Be aware of package rules, such as whether all adults in the same cabin are required to purchase one.

Final Thoughts

Ultimately, whether a drink package is worth it comes down to your travel style and preferences. If you’re someone who loves the idea of sipping a frozen cocktail on deck without a second thought, it might be a splurge that enhances your trip. On the other hand, if you’re more focused on exploring ports or aren’t a big beverage consumer, paying per drink might be the better route.

Why a Family Trip Beats Holiday Gifts

The holidays are a time for family, connection, and creating memories—but how often do those gifts under the tree truly reflect that? Sure, unwrapping presents is fun, but in a few months (or days), most of those items are forgotten. What if, instead of spending time shopping, wrapping, and worrying about what to buy, you invested in something lasting: quality time together?

This year, I’ve seen more families decide to skip the piles of presents and instead plan a trip together. It’s a trend I absolutely love. Think about it: instead of squeezing in visits between hectic holiday schedules, you could all head to a sunny beach, a snowy mountain, or even a magical theme park. You’re not just giving your family something tangible—you’re giving them an experience they’ll remember for years.

A family trip doesn't have to mean breaking the budget. You could plan a weekend getaway to a cozy cabin, a road trip to see Christmas lights, or a cruise that makes holiday meals a breeze (no cooking or cleaning!). Cruises are a great option for multi-generational family groups since you have everything from affordable inside cabins to luxury suites with a butler on some ships making it accessible to different budgets. The key is being intentional about spending time together and creating those shared memories that no sweater, gadget, or toy could replace.

What I love most about this idea is how it simplifies the holiday season. Instead of stressing over finding the perfect gift for each person, you focus on planning something meaningful for everyone. Plus, it’s a gift for you, too—you get to be part of the fun!

If this sounds like something your family would enjoy, let’s chat. I’d love to help you plan a trip that brings everyone closer together. The holidays should be about connection, and I can’t think of a better way to celebrate than exploring somewhere new with the ones you love.

5 Tips for Intentionally Spending Your Travel Dollars

Travel is a precious experience, not just for us as travelers but also for the communities we visit. Every dollar we spend on our journey has an impact—and with a little thought, we can make that impact positive and intentional. Here are five tips to help you travel with purpose, using your spending power to support local businesses, promote sustainability, and enrich your experiences.

  • 1. Use a Local Travel Advisor

Like with any industry, spending locally circulates more dollars in your community. Commissions are built into the prices of most tours, cruises, resorts and hotels.  Most of the time your prices are the same.  If you feel more comfortable booking direct at least use the same phone agent you asked a million questions to. They're still travel agents and it makes a difference in their compensation.  Booking online may seem easy, but working with a local travel advisor can add so much more value to your trip. Travel advisors don’t just help with logistics; we understand destinations deeply and can help match you with authentic experiences that align with your values. A good travel advisor knows local partners, hidden gems, and responsible companies, and can make sure your travel dollars go to the right places. Plus, we help save you time—so you get to relax and enjoy, knowing your trip is crafted with care. Having a human to contact directly when you have a question or problem is priceless.

  • 2. Choose Locally-Owned Tours and Activities

When it comes to tours and excursions, choosing locally-owned businesses makes a huge difference. These are often run by locals who have a personal connection to the area and can provide a unique, insider’s perspective. Whether it’s a guided hike, cooking class, or boat tour, opting for a locally-owned company helps keep the money you spend within the community, supporting local livelihoods and preserving cultural heritage. Not only do you get a more genuine experience, but you also get to contribute directly to the community you’re visiting.

  •  3. Spend with Companies Who Address Sustainability and Impact

Sustainable travel companies are committed to making a positive impact on the environment, wildlife, and local communities. This could mean anything from reducing plastic use to providing fair wages and supporting conservation efforts. Look for businesses that are transparent about their practices and goals. As travel advisors, we keep an eye out for companies that meet these standards and are glad to recommend responsible operators who put people and the planet first. Your spending can make a real difference by supporting companies actively working to protect the places we love to visit. One of the reasons you see lots of Virgin Voyages ads from me (even though I love cruising in general) is they are the only company that is clear they are inclusive of LGTBQ guests, have models of all different backgrounds in their marketing materials, pay crew members fairly and make an effort to mitigate the inevitable environmental impact of larger ship cruising.  That line who shall remain nameless that too many of us love to throw money at has a reputation for being horrible to work for, numerous safety/environmental concerns and does not invest back into the demographics who keep them full.  I also love El Dorado Resorts in Riviera Maya because they are Mexican owned, and they have a commitment to growing and sourcing local produce to invest in the surrounding community (you'd be surprised how many of those huge hotels are based in Spain and the money goes right out of the country). Even when selecting chains and all-inclusive resorts over small boutique hotels we have better choices.

  •  4. Buy Souvenirs Made Locally

When it comes to mementos, locally-made souvenirs add a special touch to your memories—and they’re also a way to give back to the community. Handmade crafts, artwork, jewelry, and textiles often tell a story of the culture and people who created them. These purchases support local artisans, preserve traditional skills, and keep cultural practices alive. By choosing locally crafted items over mass-produced goods, you’re taking home a piece of the destination’s true character.

  •  5. Eat More Locally Grown Foods

Food is one of the best ways to connect with a destination, and eating locally-grown produce is a fantastic way to do so. Not only will you enjoy fresher, more flavorful meals, but you’ll also support local farmers and reduce your environmental footprint. Locally-sourced ingredients mean fewer miles traveled to get to your plate, and by choosing eateries that prioritize regional cuisine, you’re helping sustain local agriculture. So go ahead and sample that local dish—you’re likely to find it’s both delicious and impactful!

---

Each decision we make while traveling can either help or harm a place. By choosing to spend with intention, you can make a positive impact, enjoy richer experiences, and return home knowing you made a difference. After all, travel is about connection—to the people, cultures, and places that make this world so incredibly diverse. Let’s make every dollar count.

Mexico’s Independence Day: A Vibrant Celebration of Freedom

Every year on September 16, Mexico comes alive with a burst of energy and color, celebrating its independence from Spain. This national holiday, Día de la Independencia, marks the day in 1810 when Father Miguel Hidalgo rang the bell in the town of Dolores and sparked the country’s fight for freedom.

Hidalgo’s call, known as the Grito de Dolores (Cry of Dolores), set off an 11-year struggle that ended with Mexico’s victory in 1821. It’s important to note that this holiday isn’t to be confused with Cinco de Mayo (which marks a much later battle)—Independence Day is about the country’s birth.

The festivities kick off on the evening of September 15, when the president of Mexico reenacts the Grito from the National Palace in Mexico City. Across the nation, local leaders do the same, with crowds shouting along. The next day is filled with parades, music, fireworks, and a lot of green, white, and red flags.

Food plays a big part in the celebration too—dishes like chiles en nogada, tamales, and pozole are staples on this day. Families gather, the streets fill up with decorations, and you can feel the sense of pride and unity.

Mexico’s Independence Day is more than just a historical date—it’s a powerful reminder of the country’s fight for freedom and the spirit that keeps its people connected.
